BSA Motors to invest Rs 50 cr next fiscal

BSA Motors plans to invest Rs 50 crore in the next fiscal as it aims to capture a 20 per cent market share of the electric scoters by 2010-11.

Mr K B Srinivasan, Vice-President, BSA Motors, said the company will invest Rs 30 crore in brand promotion and market development and Rs 20 crore in R&D to develop motor controller technology and battery-charging facilities.

“We will launch three more models this year. If the demand picks up we will double our current production, which is 150 units per day. We are not yet at full production capacity,” said Mr Srinivasan.
The company also plans to increase its number of stores from 80 to 200 this year.

“We would have charging points for the scooters at our dealership and besides this we are also looking at setting up charging points at various public places,” said Mr Srinivasan.

BSA Motors, which recently opened its store in Nepal, said it is also looking at Africa, West Asia and South America as potential export markets.

Mr. Srinivasan added that BSA is looking at further incentives from the Government for manufacturing electric scooters.

“We are asking for uniform VAT and road tax exemptions and we also want a reduction in the excise duty for parts,” he said.

BSA’s electric scooters receive subsidies from the state Government in Delhi and Lakshadweep. “Delhi Government gives a 30 per cent subsidy for electric scooters. Delhi contributes about 20 per cent of our total sales,” said Mr Srinivasan.

The company launched two new models on Thursday.

BSA Edge has a motor rated power of 1,250 Watts, the highest in its category and delivers a peak power of 1,600 Watt. The scooter requires 6-8 hours of charging for a full charge. BSA Motors also launched the Roamer Able which has an independent rear a stable ride.

It has a motor power of 500 Watts and can reach a top speed of 40 kmph in power mode and 25 kmph in economy mode. The scooter will be available for Rs 35,000 ex-showroom. The target market is the physically challenged.
